Football Club “Merani”
The Martvili football club “Merani” was established on the base of club “Salkhino” in one of the most beautiful region of Georgia – Martvili (Chkondideli Eparchy) abundant of true patriots fond of football and football traditions.
The history of football in Martvili begins in 1955 when the football team “Salkhino” of Gegechkori (now Martvili) region was established for development of the football with the endeavors of the true local patriot Gigla Surmava.
Since 1955 the Gegechkori team “Salkhino” had attained a great success in the football championship of Georgia and in 1960 passed to the first division of the Georgian Cup. It played in the first division for many years where the football core was composed of such teams as Sukhumi “Dinamo”, Zugdidi “Dinamo”, Poti “Kolketi”, Senaki “Egrisi”, Samtredia “Locomotive”, Lanchkhuti “Guria”, Ozurgeti “Mertskhali”, Batumi “Dinamo”, Kutaisi “Dinamo”, Tquibuli “Miner”, Chiatura “Miner”, Zestafoni “Metallurgist”, Gori “Dila”, Akhaltsikhe “Meskheti”, Takhinvali “Spartak”, Telavi “Nadikvari”, Tbilisi “Sinatle”, Sport Army Club “Isani”, Institute of Physical Culture. The footprint made by Gegechkori “Salkhino” in the football history was the credit of Mr. Gigla Surmava and the coach Kishvard Chilaya.
In 1974 the football club “Salkhino” was transferred to the chairman of the sport society “Kolmeurne” Guram Chilaya under the leadership of whom the club gained a great successes. Until 1972 the coach team was led by the chief coach Bichiko Shalelashvili.
In 1968-1977 by the Mr. Guram Chilaya’s initiative and the support of the head of regional administration Nodar Chkholaria in Martvili was built the football stadium. Until his death Mr. Guram Chilaya took care about the football infrastructure and development of this sports. Since 1972 for many years side by side with him were Zaur Bartaya and Dazmir Vakhania with the status of chief coaches. Just during the period of couching of Mr. Dazmir Vakhania “Salkhino” scored a success.
1977 – the Georgian Cup Final in Tbilisi
1974 – awarded with A. Jordania Cup
1975 – the 2nd place for “Gold Ear” Cup in Moldavia
1976 – the 3rd place for “Gold Ear” Cup in Yerevan
1978 – 1st place for Gold Ear” Cup in Martvili
1977 – awarded with A. Jordania Cup in Tbilisi
In 1981 the chief coach of “Salkhino” became Givi Kveselava, coach – Demur Chkhetia, team manager – Dazmir Vakhania.
In 1983 – the Collective Farmers Cup Final in Tskhinvali
1985 – awarded with A. Jordania Cup
1986 - the Georgian Cup Final in Tbilisi
Since 1991 due to the well-known events Gegechkori “Salkhino” stopped to play in the Georgian National Championship.
In 1997 with the endeavors of the president of Martvili football federation Emil Galdava “Salkhino” involved in the Georgian championship with the coaches Mikheil Khelaya and Galaktion Chubabria.
The football team “Salkhino” had grown up the football players of international class: the central back and team captain of Tbilisi “Dinamo”.
The National USSR Team Murtaz Khurtsilava, Kutaisi “Torpedo” forward and participant of many All-Union championships Devis Darjania demanded further revival.
The revival commenced when Martvili football was headed by Mr. Fridon Injia and his son Ilya Injia. This was the great football renaissance in the region in line of development of the infrastructure and football by itself.
On the base of the football club “Salkhino” Mr. Fridon Injia, Nugzar Maniava, Dazmir Vakhania, Emil Galdava established the football club “Merani” which has consolidated itself in the first division of the Georgian championship.
2007-2008 – the 3rd place of the Championship of 1st Division of Georgia
2008-2009 – the 3rd place of the Championship of 1st Division of Georgia
2009-2010 – the 3rd place of the Championship of 1st Division of Georgia
In 2009-2010 within Davit Kipiani Championship of Georgia for the first time in the Georgian football history the team of the first division – Martvili “Merani” passed to the semi-final.
